Yes, Mint Juleps take center stage for the Derby, but we can't forget about this incredibly refreshing companion, the Kentucky Oaks Lily. So easy to make AND drink during the most exciting horse race of the year!

Enjoying a Lily at the Kentucky Oaks is a requirement if you ever get the opportunity to attend (IMHO). Less boozy than the Mint Julep, but still with plenty of flavor, it's one of those cocktails you can enjoy on Race Day, or any spring or summer afternoon.
Move over Mint Julep - we can't forget how delightful it is to enjoy a Kentucky Oaks Lily
I like the simplicity of this cocktail, and know that guests enjoy it, too. It's also the perfect alternative to those that may not appreciate bourbon (gasp!).
When it comes to making a single cocktail - and because I prefer fresh ingredients - I'm a fan of fresh lemon + simple syrup vs. a pre-made sweet and sour mix. But for pre-batch Lilys (which you'll see below), I'm recommending a sweet and sour mix to make the drinks more consistent, and your job easier!
The Kentucky Oaks Lily
Ingredients (makes 1 cocktail)
1 oz quality vodka (Ketel One or Grey Goose are great options)
1/4 oz triple sec
1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
1/2 oz simple syrup
3 oz cranberry juice
lemon slices and blackberries to garnish
Mix it Up
Fill a stemless wine glass or large cocktail glass with ice.
Add all ingredients to the glass and stir
Garnish with blackberries and a lemon wedge; include a straw (optional)
Lilys for a Crowd (batch cocktail)
Ingredients (makes 8 cocktails)
Make a couple of hours in advance to place in the refrigerator and give it time to chill
8 oz quality vodka (Ketel One or Grey Goose are great options)
2 oz triple sec
8 oz sweet and sour mix (or 4 oz fresh lemon juice and 4 oz simple syrup)
24 oz cranberry juice
lemon slices and blackberries to garnish
In a large pitcher, Mix all ingredients and place in the fridge
When it's time to serve, add plenty of ice to a stemless wine glass or large cocktail glass
Pour about 5 oz of the drink into the glass. Serve with a lemon slice and blackberries; include a straw (optional)
Drink to your horse running for the roses!
