And they're off! To sip on one of the most iconic cocktails of Kentucky, the Mint Julep. Here's how you make the classic, plus check out a couple of options for a contemporary twist.

There's no denying that the Mint Julep is synonymous with the Kentucky Derby. That bourbon-rich, ice-cold cocktail is the perfect pairing with the excitement of the races. A classic Mint Julep is straightforward, with only three ingredients - but technique is everything.
Put on your most festive spring hats, your floral dresses and your seersucker suits - then enjoy a Mint Julep
Muddling the mint and simple syrup takes a delicate hand. Don't crush the mint too much, or you'll get a more bitter profile to the drink. And don't be stingy with the mint either - a full stem with 7 - 10 leaves is a good amount. Plus, add more to garnish.
And while I don't think I need to say this, I'll still say it. You MUST use Kentucky Bourbon. Nothing less will do.
Keep reading for some elevated alternatives to the classic. Get ready for Post Time!

Other Variations and Options
The 'Minty' Mint Julep
Make mint simple syrup:
Add 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water to a saucepan.
Bring to a boil and dissolve all sugar. Once it's dissolved, remove from heat.
Add a large handful of mint to the syrup; let it steep for 15 minutes or so.
Strain the mint out of the syrup and let it cool.
Use the mint simple syrup in place of the regular syrup and make your Mint Julep
The Sparkling Mint Julep
This variation brings a bit of effervescence to the cocktail:
Prepare the Mint Julep as outlined above
Pour 2 - 3 oz of Prosecco over the cocktail
Mix gently and also serve with a mint sprig
The Berry Bramble Julep
This variation incorporates fresh fruit flavor:
When preparing the Mint Julep, first muddle the mint and syrup as outlined above
Add fresh blackberries to the glass; muddle the fruit, taking care not to continue to crush the mint any more
Add the ice and bourbon as outlined above.
Raise your glass as you cheer your horse on to victory!
