A creepy appetizer on a Halloween table creates a dramatic focal point, while also providing a delicious hors d'oeuvre everyone loves. Is it kind of icky? Yes. And that's what makes this gruesome charcuterie board so amazing.

I've made this for several parties, and every time, I get two main reactions:

  • That is so amazing!

  • That is so disturbing!

And I love hearing both of them. This shriveled skeleton head is just what your charcuterie board needs to delight (and maybe gross out) guests, create drama on your table, and serve up ghoulish Halloween fun!

Encourage your guests to peel away the prosciutto - it actually gets even creepier!

It's easy to make and can be staged in so many creative ways: Add a carrot or piece of cheese to its mouth, have an eyeball falling out, or create guacamole vomit. This WILL be a hit at your next Halloween party or gathering!

Shriveled Head Halloween Charcuterie Board

Ingredients + Supplies

  • Plastic skull

  • Plastic wrap

  • 2 - 3 packages of prosciutto

  • Charcuterie board or platter

  • Additional cheeses, meats, fruits, etc.

How to make it:

  1. Wash the skull with soap and water; dry thoroughly.

  2. Wrap the skull with a layer of plastic wrap, cutting away the wrap around the mouth and nose and creating a small slit in the plastic wrap in each of the eye sockets.

  3. Place the skull on your board or platter.

  4. Tear the prosciutto in pieces and layer over the skull, starting at the top of the head. Larger pieces can be used at the top of the head, while smaller pieces work better around the eyes, nose and mouth. Cover all of the skull, until no 'bone' is showing.

  5. To create eyes: insert an olive into each slit in the plastic wrap in the eye socket. Regular olives, blue cheese olives, and cocktail onions are all options for the eyes.

  6. Finish the board by adding your cheeses, crackers, meats, fruits, etc.

Don't forget - encourage people to peel away the 'skin' throughout the evening - and watch how it transforms!

You can also make this amazing "Undead Rat," using the same process above:
